A7sii – Sony – Technical– Meta Data at 4k and Screen size different 4k and HD
PROBLEM
When I film in XAVC S 4k-25p 100M with my Sony A7S II the video image occupies the entire surface of the monitor (photo attached). But when I shoot in XAVC S HD-25p50M the image does not occupy the entire screen (photo attachment). What is the reason for this problem and do I need to update the monitor? When I film in XAVC S HD mode the information (histogram, audio volume, level, etc.) can be displayed on the screen, which is not possible when I shoot in 4K? Is that normal?
SOLUTION
The Meta Data is lost at the 4K resolutions, it’s a Sony decision (and most likely a hardware limitation), to allow for more 4k data space in the transmission. So you can only see that information using HD.
As to the frame size, this again is a Sony decision, you can see an explanation here to allow for Mirroring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNTLPFCwhqk
What it sends directly is actually what you are seeing on the screen on the camera, which includes matte and data outside that and why it appears smaller, the 4k signal, loses the meta data, so it fills the screen.
Adjusting your settings when in HD should hold when switching to 4k.
